What is a volcano? A volcano is an opening in the Earth's crust where molten rock, called magma, escapes from deep underground. It forms when pressure builds up inside the Earth, forcing magma, gas, and ash to burst through the surface. Over time, the cooled material builds up to create the mountain shape we recognize.
Stay indoors with windows closed and wear a mask if you must go outside to avoid breathing in tiny bits of volcanic ash.
